Beware of the strange (and dangerous) creatures which lurk here. Make sure you have your wand! It might be helpful. Maybe...

Ainala took a deep breath to steady her nerves, then looked at Katie. "Ready?" The girl nodded, looking as nervous as she felt. "Right." She closed her eyes and began to concentrate. "Kalyn," she hissed in a whisper, "Don't get too far away from us. We have to get you out of here, too."

Then she couldn't hear whether Hikalyn replied or not. She was too busy summoning her power to her, channeling it through Katie and into the opal.

Hikalyn gave the sprite a startled look, almost recoiled. Only one person had ever called her just "Kalyn." Her sister....

Hikalyn shook herself; there was no time for that now. And in truth, she would have been perfectly happy if there was no time for that ever. She didn't want to remember.

She turned her attention back to her task. So she was telepathic, was she? Well, it was time to see what that was worth.

You. I know you can hear me. Where are you? she demanded, praying that this insane idea of hers would actually work.

The voice came back almost instantly, and Hikalyn knew that he was making sure her companions heard it too. What's the matter? Are you getting lonely? Hikalyn ground her teeth against the mockery in that voice.

I want some answers! She couldn't believe she was being this rash, but then she had little other choice. Just why the hell did you bring us here?

That voice once again was broadcasted for them all. It was as if he thought he would gain something by letting Katie and Ainala know she was telepathic....If she really was. She wasn't sure she believed it yet--maybe it was just some freakish power that this 'master' had.

Well, wouldn't you like to know?

Ainala heard the voice, but only vaguely. It still made her skin crawl, but right now she had other things to worry about. The strain of holding onto and controlling so much power was wearing on her, especially since she was already worn out from this ordeal. White and blue spots swam before her eyes as she struggled to keep control. "Katie, hurry!" she whispered urgently.

Yeah, maybe I would! She didn't have to fake the anger in her mind-voice, though she thought surely she was a half-wit for saying something like this to the thing that had brought her here. It could probably kill her just as easily. But this was the only chance they had. She used that anger to shield her from her fear.

The thing chuckled darkly. Oh, you're a brave one, aren't you? it asked. Or are you just a fool? There are some questions, my dear girl, that are better left unanswered.

"I'm not your girl," Hikalyn snapped aloud. Well, there has to be a reason you brought us here, she thought, abruptly changing her mind-voice to something more reasonable. If she made it angry enough to kill her--she had to give Katie and Ainala enough time to get them out of here. It seems like a lot of trouble to go to just to terrorize a couple of students.

The thing laughed, but suddenly the tone changed again to something darker. It made Hikalyn shudder. What, did you think I don't know what you're doing? The air around them suddenly crackled with power.

Hikalyn felt sudden, flaring pain--it was so strong and unexpected that it drove her to her knees. But even then she suspected that she wasn't getting the worst of it. It was mostly directed at Katie and Ainala.

No, just Ainala, Hikalyn realized suddenly. She and Katie weren't even getting the worst of it. She understood. Stop Ainala, and Katie wouldn't have enough power on her own to get all three of them out of here, even with the opal. "Ainala!" she cried. Even from here she could see that she sprite wasn't having an easy time of it. Her eyes were wide, one of her wings was blackening. A hole had been torn in it. And the expression on her face was possibly the most horrific thing Hikalyn had ever seen.

"Do it now!" she whispered, not even aware of what she was saying.

The pain drove into her like a lance. She doubled over, crying out, but her voice was lost in the roar of power in her ears. Her power...Katie's power...the master's power...One thought kept her from giving into the agony and simply passing out on the floor--if she couldn't do this, they were all dead.

Hardly aware of what she was doing, she took the pain and used it to ground her in reality. It was an anchor against the flood of magic that Katie was still putting into the opal. "That's enough," she whispered, then raised her voice to practically a shriek. "Katie! Do it now!"

There was a wrench and then everything stopped--the quiet seemed to roar in her ears, it was so sudden and so complete that it was almost defeaning. For a minute the three of them hovered in a void, and for one heart-stopping moment Ainala thought they were dead, or trapped.

But then they were thrown onto the grass just outside the forest with enough force that Ainala was left breathless--but then she felt that way anyway. Her left wing ached like fury where a hole had been torn in it, and she swayed dizzily for a moment before collapsing to the ground. "Everybody--all--right?" she managed to mutter. She heard a voice, somehow familiar, in the back of her mind, but she couldn't make out the words. Darkness took her.

The breath left her lungs in a gasp when she hit the ground, but after a few moments she was able to pick herself up and call out, sounding only slightly winded, "Katie? Ainala?"

A few feet away, Katie was picking herself up. "I'm all right," she croaked. "But where's Ainala?"

It took a few seconds of frantically scanning the ground to find the sprite's tiny form. She was sprawled limply on the ground, facedown. Her damaged wing was clearly visible, and Hikalyn winced in sympathy. She heard Katie breathe, "is she--?" and knelt down, scooping Ainala up in an arm.

"No, she's still breathing," she said in relief. She looked up at Katie. They hadn't exactly clicked at first, and Hikalyn still doubted that they'd ever wind up becoming best friends, but...She smiled, and Katie smiled.

With an effort, she made herself stand--all she wanted to do was go back to the dorms and lie down for a good, long sleep. She looked down at Ainala's prone form in her arms. "I guess we'd better get her some help." Neither she or Katie said anything as they turned and headed back to the castle.
